Press Release
Voltz Clarke Gallery is pleased to present new works by Mike Hansel.
In his sculpture practice, Mike Hansel creates highly crafted, organic forms that contradict what we might expect from such rigid, industrial materials. Hansel uses sculpture as a means of pointing people away from what they take for granted and towards an oddly humorous domain composed of vaguely familiar elements. In the metallic compositions, the artist prompts the viewer to observe carefully and apply personal memory to develop their own associations with the forms. The new series includes both small and medium scale sculpture ranging from works sitting atop pedestals to standing directly in a interior room or outdoor environment. Hansel views the smaller scale pieces as studies and models for his larger commissioned works for both indoor and outdoor spaces.
Mike Hansel received a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989 and a Bachelor of Fine Art in ceramics from the University of Cincinnati in 1986. His work has been exhibited around the United States in various shows and public collections.
