Press Release
Voltz Clarke Gallery is pleased to present INTERTWINED, a summer group exhibition curated by Caroline Conwill.
Incorporating a variety of mediums and composition styles, INTERTWINED reflects on a selection of work by artists who engage with themes of connection conceptually and visually. The show features artwork by Jacinto Moros, Jason Trotter, Khalilah Birdsong, Katy Ferrarone, Lucy Soni, Rachel Rose, Stephanie Patton, Sasha Sykes, and Yiorgos Kordakis, and introduces new sculptures by Eliza Bentz.
From the woven threads found in the ceramic and textile wall sculptures by Eliza Bentz to the curving, cohesive brushstrokes by Lucy Soni, the physical lines in the gallery presentation pull and move throughout developing an intertwined network. These joined elements manifest in contrasting ways such as Jacinto Moros’ delicately balanced and whimsical maple wood and formica sculptures compared to the structured triptychs united within Jason Trotter’s handmade oak frames. Painting with texture and gesture, Khalilah Birdsong layers acrylic and oil stick in Panacea as she delves into “the idea of universal healing through abstraction.” The canvas’ reflective quality connects to the meditative state conveyed through Katy Ferrarone’s thought bubbles and Stephanie Patton’s quilted fabric as they confront messages related to mental health and mindfulness.
Figurative works in the selection engage with personal relationships and connection through flora and fauna found in Rachel Rose’s painting and Sasha Sykes’ circular wall sculpture. Rose utilizes tendrils to convey hidden tensions as Sykes composes organic material from her mother’s garden as she explains this natural space to be a “complex interconnection of location and design, climate and ecology, soil and plants, and a huge amount of knowledge, work, energy and love.” Working with a different medium, Yiorgos Kordakis captures space and time through polaroid photography. The exposed sky and activity in the desert setting pulls the viewer into the immersive composition.
The varied palettes, lines, mediums, and abstract and figurative forms presented by the ten artists invites reflection to survey the interconnection and pull found in each piece, each INTERTWINED.
