Katy Ferrarone

Katy Ferrarone received her BFA in Painting from Syracuse University in 1998 and an AAS in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design in 2004. She has had solo exhibitions in Singapore, Telluride, Colorado and Connecticut. She has been featured in publications such as: The New York Times, Venue Magazine, The Fairfieldista and The Fairfield Citizen. She lives and works in New York with her husband and three young sons.

Katy Ferrarone creates her body of work around the idea of mindfulness. The circle or oval forms seen throughout this body of work represent a full expression of a thought or emotion. The focal point, or center, of each painting acknowledges the beginning of that thought or emotion. As the circle form (or thought) expands, the compositions become much more complex. The hash markings represent an effort to quiet down those thoughts. Through her work, Ferrarone hopes to create a basis of conversation about the ability of the mind to remain present and to ultimately find peace.

My work centers around mindfulness. Through the use of color, space and scale, I depict the emotions I am feeling at the time the work is created. These images are essentially maps of what my mind is experiencing at the present moment. My plan is to ask the questions: How do we stay in a mindful state? Do we experience a settling of our emotions and thoughts when we are focused, without judgment? Each work is a direct expression of staying still and the awareness of emotions during the art-making process. The repetitive marks in the work are a tool for me to quiet my thoughts and remain present. ~ Katy Ferrarone
