Press Release

Voltz Clarke Gallery is pleased to present A View From the Garden, a solo exhibition by Holland Cunningham.

A View From the Garden honors the transient and delicate moments of everyday life. Holland Cunningham’s works combine vivid hues and soft, expressive forms which immerse the viewer in the gentle rhythm of natural life. Drawing inspiration from her travels in Europe, her work reflects a focus on organic forms and quiet moments, particularly evident in her depictions of flowers and nature. Cunningham’s paintings uniquely incorporate loose, gestural brushwork and layered color, creating a sense of movement and environment rather than a fixed detail.

Much of Cunningham’s practice is based on suspended fragments of everyday life which often include a figurative aspect. The New York-based artist is constantly exploring non-figurative work, focusing on views of gardens, plants, and what one might see through their window. In her paintings, she aims to capture the fleeting moments of life which are likely to change at any given moment. Cunningham views each of her works as a part of a continuous narrative, telling their stories in harmony. Ultimately, Cunningham’s art derives from memory, intentionally leaving space for the viewer’s own recollections and memories to surface.

Holland Cunningham was born in Southwestern Virginia and studied Art History and Studio Art at the University of Virginia. She continued her studies at the Art Students League, National Academy of Art and Design, and New York School of the Arts. In Spring 2022, she was a resident at the American Academy in Rome and in Summer of 2012, a resident at the Bau Institute in Puglia, Italy. She lives in New York and London with studios in Manhattan, Quogue, and London.
