Press Release

Voltz Clarke Gallery is pleased to present Somewhere in Time, a solo exhibition by Leyla Pekmen.

In Somewhere in Time, Leyla Pekmen constructs a self-contained world shaped by water, light, and shifting time. Rooted in her ongoing engagement with landscape and memory, the works unfold as quiet, immersive scenes that move between observation and invention. Monkeys move freely through the compositions, and the bay itself registers as a quiet, living presence. Each painting traces subtle shifts in light and atmosphere, where time loosens and extends, rather than follows a fixed progression.

Pekmen’s use of bold color and controlled texture establishes a visual rhythm that is both structured and open-ended. Moments of stillness and movement coexist, allowing the art to hold a sense of suspension. Developed during a period marked by uncertainty, Somewhere in Time becomes a quiet, optimistic gesture – an invitation to slow down, to drift, and to reconnect with the simple, enduring magic of being.

Leyla Pekmen is a contemporary artist living and working in Istanbul. Born and raised in Turkey, Pekmen’s works are bold and expressive, often utilizing color blocking and pointillism to create framing and texture. Most of her practice centers around concepts of combining life’s simple pleasures with that of whimsy storytelling. Themes around nature, landscapes and travel are dropped into a fantastical narrative, often exploring the ideas of memory and comfort. Her paintings revolve around creating this narrative scene reflecting her identity as a storyteller.
