Voltz Clarke Gallery is pleased to present Ostinato a solo exhibition with Jeff Chester.

Born from the traditions of minimalism, both in painting and musical composition, Jeff Chester’s new works use the constraints of repetitive patterns and objects as a creative catalyst. They explore the idea that limitation can be a form of liberation.

As a Canadian, Chester’s artistic expression is intrinsically woven with the tapestry of homeland identity – particularly iconic winters. Knit mittens and socks serve as nostalgic emblems. They evoke memories of shared cultural experiences and interlinked communities, stitched together while meeting at the skating rink or sliding down a snowy hill on frigid days.

The tactility of knit fabrics juxtaposes against the flatness of the canvas’ surface. The glossy oil paint reflects light that is reminiscent of ice crystals and laden snow, shimmering under moonlight. Mittens and socks fade and drift across the surface of the pieces, questioning the passage of time and the fleeting nature of memories and cultural stories.

Chester received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario in 2001. He has been represented by Voltz Clarke Gallery since 2019.
