Leyla Pekmen Featured On Air Mail
In this time of war, climate change, and political chaos, it can be difficult to find any joy or relief. Enter Leyla Pekmen. The Turkish artist, born in 1977 and now based in Istanbul, makes colorful, whimsical paintings and sculptures. Pekmen developed an interest in painting at a young age, while spending time in her neighbor’s studio, yet she worked in advertising until 2010. That year, she joined a local studio and reignited her passion for art. In 2021, Pekmen had her first solo show in Istanbul. Inspired by Ottoman miniatures, Pekmen often uses color blocking and pointillism in her work. A natural storyteller, she incorporates nature and landscapes into imaginary worlds. These playful paintings, however, cast a strange spell: the longer you look at them, the more surreal they become. —Jeanne Malle
