Jennifer Caviola and Katy Ferrarone are two painters who study and engage with the use of lines, grids, and fields. Whether through the use of gentle dappled brushstrokes or bold geometric designs, the artists utilize the grid as a framework, while exploring new terrains and modes of expression. Their paintings make an enticing contrast with their acute differences and variations, yet both call upon the intuitive process and practice of abstraction.
Jennifer Caviola
Jennifer Caviola received her BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in 2002, NY and her MFA from Parsons in New York City in 2007. She has had solo shows in New York City, Brooklyn, and California and has participated in group shows throughout the United States, Europe and the Middle East. She has been featured in publications such as Vogue, The Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Complex Magazine, Papermag, Juxtapoz and High Fructose.
Artist Statement
This body of work centers around grid and grid based forms and how they may or may not interact with more painterly expressive mark making. The contrast between the two sparks ambitious formal dynamics that weave in and out, lay on top or underneath, hide or reveal. Using color as the bridge between them allows me to create sublime conversations within each panel and the finished painting serves as documentation of the exchanges. My ultimate satisfaction comes from the search for completion, with each decision making intriguing steps to that end. I find endless possibilities within the Grid formation, which proves to be a formidable subject matter. The structure creates order and intelligence and promotes truth, and within that I find great beauty and comfort. The gestural parts connect as the more vulnerable and almost child like counterpart, ignorant of any restraints. Each piece becomes part of a larger conversation for me that revolves around painting, beauty, humanity, discord, resolution and experience. ~ Jennifer Caviola
Katy Ferrarone
Katy Ferrarone received her BFA in Painting from Syracuse University in 1998 and an AAS in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design in 2004. She has had solo exhibitions in Singapore, Telluride, Colorado and Connecticut. She has been featured in publications such as: The New York Times, Venue Magazine, The Fairfieldista and The Fairfield Citizen. She lives and works in Singapore with her husband and three young sons.
Artist Statement
I am currently creating a body of work around the idea of mindfulness. Through the use of color, mixed media, space and scale, I depict the emotions I am feeling at the time the work is created. These images are essentially maps of what my mind and body are experiencing at the particular moment. My plan is to ask the questions: Can we stay in a mindful state? What happens to the brain when we are mindful or focused on our one particular emotion, without judgment? Each work is a direct expression of my particular state of mind and what emotions it travels through during the art-making process. My hope is to create a basis of conversation with my work. I’d like to open discussions about the ability of the mind to remain present and to ultimately find peace. ~ Katy Ferrarone
About the Curators
Emily McElwreath is currently Director of Communications and Education at The Brant Foundation Art Study Center in Greenwich, CT. The Brant Foundation is an internationally recognized art institution that promotes contemporary art research and appreciation through educational programming, biannual exhibitions and by providing resources for scholarly research. Emily oversees The Foundation’s educational initiatives while fostering relationships with supporters and partners of The Brant Foundation. Previously, Emily was an art teacher at The Benjamin School, in addition to consulting for Samuel Owen Gallery in Greenwich, CT. She holds an M.A. in Art History from Purchase College and has completed the Art Business Certification Program at Christie’s Education.
Danielle Ogden recently served as Senior Manager of Adult Learning at National Gallery Singapore and is currently Associate Director, Academic Programs at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum. She holds an MA in Art History from Boston University and an Ed.M from Harvard University. Danielle has over 11 years of national and international experience working in art museums, historic houses, national heritage sites, and cultural institutions. She has designed and implemented educational programs and curatorial projects at the British National Trust at Tytesfield, the Newport Restoration Foundation, and the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard.
