Voltz Clarke Gallery is pleased to present Current Motion, a solo exhibition featuring the paintings of Mary Nelson Sinclair, opening October 4, 2016.
Sinclair’s latest body of work is a study in exuberant gesture. While her previous canvasses were still and carefully balanced, these serve as records of emotional and physical activity. The artist’s brushstrokes – quick, joy-, and purposeful – betray the specificity of their action so completely that they seem to decorate time rather than space. Upon observation, one sees not only the art object, but also the movements that made it.
Both conceptually and aesthetically, Sinclair takes inspiration from the sea. Her marks recall ripples on water or sand and speak to the poignant fact that these impressions are the same across surfaces, including hers. There is one telling difference, though: The ocean catalogues the passage of time by wearing away these surfaces, Sinclair by building them up. The paintings in Current Motion exist in many moments at once, neither frantic nor static, and question the limits of the still image to depict motion through gesture and across time.
