Jason Trotter, Proper Shape no. 10, 2023, Acrylic on canvas, 50 x 25 x 2.50 inches (framed)

Jason Trotter’s work explores the relationship between color and form. Rendered in acrylics, they are
comprised of three canvases assembled and framed as one piece. He was drawn to the
multi-canvas approach because the interplay between panels enables simple shapes to
unite, resulting in non-representational compositions that are bold and visually
compelling. Trotter employs a hard-edge painting technique that produces sharp lines with
abrupt transitions between color areas. His rectilinear compositions are inspired by lines
and forms observed in daily life. The artist sketches in silence through a process that is both
meditative and hypotonic. He works toward a composition that feels balanced and exudes a
sense of spatial unity. Trotter’s most recent works take on a more architectural feel as the lines
shift from mostly angular to primarily horizontal and vertical. His colors are mostly custom
and are chosen intuitively. He works on a flat surface, first executing the process of taping off
the shapes then building up several layers of paint with a brush before applying the final
layer with palette knives and other tools for ample texture. Trotter’s work is intended to evoke
an instinctual reaction that uplifts and inspires.

Jason Trotter is an American artist known for his bold geometric abstracts rendered in
acrylics. The self-taught painter was drawn to minimal hard-edged abstraction through the
influence of Carmen Herrera, Ellsworth Kelly, Josef Albers, and Frank Stella. A graduate of
Northern Illinois University, Trotter currently resides in Los Angeles where he works from
his home studio.

In 2019, Trotter was featured in Forbes, Manhattan Magazine and included in the biannual New Canaan Holiday House Tour.
