Gail Albert Halaban

Gail Albert Halaban was born in Washington D.C in 1970. It became clear Gail was interested in photography when she made a camera for her first grade science fair. She now holds an MFA from Yale University and currently resides and works in New York.

Artist’s Statement

Contemporary viewers are well aware of photography’s artifice. The world of my photographs is so descriptive and convincing that viewers, despite their Post-Modern understanding of photography, still accept it as fact. My fictions become more truthful than facts. Believe the pictures at your own risk as the stories are not always true. Having worked in Los Angeles, I borrow the tools of the cinematic trade to create fictions that are more believable than the facts that inspired them. I do not draw attention to the artificiality as that would interfere with the psychological narrative. This Stage of Motherhood aims to portray the alluring world of this strong group of women, who manage to be wonderful mothers, great friends and iconographic subjects.
