Sasha Sykes

New York, NY June 2017 - Voltz Clarke Gallery is pleased to present The Gardening, a solo exhibition featuring Sasha Sykes most recent body of work in Spring 2018..

Inspired by her surrounding Irish landscape, Sykes creates bespoke contemporary furniture and functional artworks. The Gardening explores the way nature transforms in both color and texture over the seasons.

For the past five years Sykes has acutely followed the seasonal changes. Using resin and acrylic to ‘freeze time’ she captures winter, spring summer and fall.  These works are landscapes in both a literal and physical sense, yet also subtly fantastical.

Sykes background in architecture infuses her work with a sense of rigor, and informs her strong approach to shape and structure.

The multi-media artist foraged materials  – from simple life forms such as algae to complex structures such as woodland moss – which she encapsulates in hand-cast resin.

Sykes’ practice has steadily increased in ambition and scale over the past 20 years, and is now featured in several important private and public collections.

This includes two significant pieces, a chair made of cast woodland materials and an Eileen Grey-inspired cast ferns screen, which are on permanent display at the National Museum of Ireland.
